The different
embroidery machines

As in life, so in embroidery: there are many options and which machine is best for you depends entirely on your requirements – your goals, your creative wishes and your budget. That’s why our most important tip is: get advice before you buy a machine! That way, you’re guaranteed to find the perfect solution.

Single needle embroidery machine

Although single-needle embroidery machines are cheap to buy and easy to operate, they are unfortunately completely unsuitable for commercial use. Their biggest disadvantage: production
with these machines takes far too long and the labor costs are far too high. In addition, single-needle embroidery machines are actually made for sewing and not for embroidery, which is why they quickly reach their limits.

Multi-needle hobby embroidery machine

There are some semi-professional embroidery machines that are around 20-30 percent cheaper than professional embroidery machines. However, you should not work with these models for more than five hours a day. This is why embroidery experts advise against semi-professional machines for the following reasons.
The first reason is that these machines have to be lightweight so that they can be moved by one person. However, this lightweight construction comes at the expense of quality, which is why semi-professional machines are not designed for efficient production. The second reason: even good hobby models quickly lose
value and can no longer be sold at an attractive price after just a few months. And the third reason: compared to professional embroidery machines, the
production costs for these machines are up to 100 percent higher.

Professional multi-needle single-head embroidery machine

Professional single-head embroidery machines impress with their excellent efficiency – thanks to their high embroidery speed, long service life and attractive prices. This makes them ideal for starting out in the embroidery business. However, setting up pure single-head embroidery machines is time-consuming and complicated, which is why modular systems have proven to be a modern alternative. The advantage of modular systems is that they can either be set up using barcode readers and automatic color assignment or can be configured directly together like multi-head embroidery machines.

Professional multi-head embroidery machines

Multi-head embroidery machines have been used for embroidery for decades and have one major advantage: as all embroidery heads move together, considerable costs can be saved – especially in the past when motors and electronics were still expensive. However, this is no longer the case, as the main cost factor today is wages. Therefore, multi-head embroidery machines only make sense today if entire lengths of fabric have to be embroidered. If, on the other hand, prefabricated items are to be embroidered – for example T-shirts – the production costs
can be up to 100 percent higher compared to modular single-head systems.

Calculate running costs correctly

The embroidery machine is the biggest investment if you want to start embroidering. But almost even more important are the ongoing production costs and therefore the labor costs incurred during embroidery. With a single machine, these make up around 65 percent of the total production costs and even with six embroidery machines, they are still around 50 percent.
