Where does Acti-Feed come from?

Acti-Feed is an innovation developed by our former parent company Saurer for boat embroidery. In boat embroidery, large fabrics (up to 1.65 x 30 meters) are often embroidered, which is why a uniform and deep thread tension is of great importance. Otherwise the embroidery could warp considerably.

It was also important to be able to process lower quality and less expensive thread. With the introduction of Acti-Feed on the Schiffli embroidery machines, the embroidery speed was increased by an impressive 300%.

How does Acti-Feed work?

Before the invention of the Acti-Feed system, the thread was also pulled into a clamping system with thread brakes on our embroidery machines (passive thread feed). This regulated the pressure and resistance of the thread.
Unfortunately, this was not automatic. Instead, the thread tension has to be adjusted by hand, depending on the thickness of the embroidery material. This has a major impact on embroidery quality and results in different embroidery patterns for different embroiderers. It is also a frequent source of errors.

However, the patented Acti-Feed system is a positive thread feed. This means that the thread is supplied by the Acti-Feed unit and is not pulled by a brake, as is the case with conventional embroidery machines. As a result, the thread has little or no tension when the machine moves. Using a sensor and complex algorithms, the embroidery machine calculates the perfect amount of thread for each stitch and continuously adapts to the embroidery material.
It is therefore possible to embroider over seams and other irregularities without any problems and without compromising the embroidery quality.

Thanks to this technology, the number of thread breaks is drastically reduced, despite a much higher embroidery speed. It also simplifies quality control and enables the exact reproduction of orders. This is because the embroidery will always look the same, as no one can tamper with the thread brakes and thus influence the embroidery pattern.
